As the Year Comes to a Close

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

Happy New Year! I hope the New Year brings you health, happiness, and small daily joys. As I reflect on Nile year 2022, I think this year’s theme, Together We Can Do Great Things, resonated throughout our Temple and activities. We at Isis Temple No. 41, Daughters of the Nile, have a lot to celebrate. We accepted 18 new members into our beautiful order. We’ve seen great success with our fundraising efforts. Our events not only raised considerable money but were lots of fun. We had a strong presence at Supreme Session in Dallas, TX. Both the Egyptian Band and Patrol had successful West Side Nut Club Fall Festival booths. Our Card Party by Mail profits allowed us to purchase three cranial remolding helmets for the St. Louis hospital Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS) program. We welcomed and entertained Her Supreme Majesty, Vickie Tabor Hill. We experienced great teamwork between Nile members and Hadi Shrine Nobles while working the 88th Shrine Circus Ticket Office assisting with circus ticket sales. We recognized four ladies who have held membership in Isis Temple No. 41 for 50 years. We recognized our Founders Day by learning facts about our founding from seven of our officers. Many members and friends attended the Derby Dinner Theater in Clarksville, IN, to see Irving Berlin’s White Christmas theater production. The bus transportation for this social trip was sponsored by a generous donation from the Hadi Motor Corps. Sadly, we grieved and memorialized those members who passed away during 2022. We sent our Jars of Hope donations to the Daughters of the Nile Charitable Giving Fund. And we presented a substantial financial gift to the Daughters of the Nile Foundation, which as you know benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I would say we’ve fulfilled this year’s motto of Live Well, Laugh Often, Let Love Grow with Friendship. It is always a delight to see the new members, along with the established members, attend Stated Session and participate in our events. Hospitality is the heart of who we are as Daughters of the Nile. You have been generous with lending your time, talents, and resources to make Isis Temple No. 41 great. You have invested personal involvement in reaching others to encourage participation and financial contributions. I want to express my sincere appreciation for your support and partnership.

Let’s celebrate. I want to give a hearty round of applause to our Past Supreme Queen, Past Queens, 2022 Officers, Ceremonial Assistants, pro tems, committee chairs, and every one of you. Let me thank each of you who served on a committee in any way. You individually and we collectively have made this year a success. Ultimately, the children receiving care through the Shriners Children’s health system will reap the benefits of your unwavering support, energy, and generosity.

I offer my deepest gratitude for the work you do in serving Isis Temple No. 41 and our Supreme Temple and your continued work to make the world a better place. I look forward to the joy and growth that 2023 will bring!

With Nile love and hugs,

Summer Fun

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

Congratulations to the nine new members who were christened into Isis Temple No. 41
on May 16, 2022. We welcome you and look forward to seeing you at Stated Sessions and
our events. The summer months have been busy for Isis Temple. Twenty-one members
attended the 106th Supreme Session, held June 12-16 in Dallas, TX. Attendees from the
United States, Canada, and Brazil gathered for five days of education, inspiration, and
celebration. Coming together for the first time in person in over two years was refreshing. It was a fun time for renewing friendships, meeting 99 fellow reigning queens, enacting legislation to better our temples and mission, and celebrating the donation of $2,257,000 presented to Imperial Potentate Bill Bailey and First Lady Debbie to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Since 1924, when Daughters of the Nile began its mission of supporting the great philanthropy of Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the US and Canadian Foundations have given more than $70 million to the hospital system. The current total membership of Daughters of the Nile is 16,910. Newly installed Supreme Queen Vickie Tabor Hill of Merak Temple No. 104 in Waco, TX, will visit Evansville on Friday, November 4, 2022. I’m hoping you will make plans to attend her official visit and celebration. There were many awards extended to Isis Temple and its members at the Supreme Session. Our temple received the Foundation’s Major Donor Recognition for 2021. Sue Layman, PSQ, was presented with a plaque signifying a $20,000 donation in her honor to the Foundation from Sue’s Musicians. The Schnakenberg family was recognized for having the second largest family in the Nile Legacy program. Congratulations to Linda Trible, PQ; Karen Schnakenberg; Sherri Schnakenberg, PQ; Jennifer Emsweller, PQ; Megan Trible; and Olivia Schnakenberg. A white rose was placed on the altar in memory of our beloved Shirley Sheets, PQ. The unit
performances were entertaining as usual. Isis Temple’s units are well known for our flashy uniforms and precision drills. Congratulations to those receiving Supreme Appointments. The queen’s party in “Margaritaville” was amazing. A big shout out to everyone for the extraordinary decorations, meaningful musical tribute, delicious snacks and beverages, and fun and games. All the events, banquets, business sessions, parties, and tours were well planned and attended, but the most rewarding aspect of Supreme
Session is seeing the many personal connections of love and devotion to our beautiful order. It is truly inspiring! I offer my sincerest gratitude for all attendees who represented Isis Temple with grace and dedication. We see the same representations in our subordinate temple. Thank you to each member for continuing to give of your time, talents, resources, and most of all, friendships!

This summer Pr. Chaplain Shannon Dierlam and I made our second visit to several members who are not able to attend Nile functions at this time. Listening to their stories
about their past Nile experiences is delightful. Their love of Daughters of the Nile never fades.

The Vanderburgh County 4-H Fair in July 2022 was a tremendous success. Thank you to Karla Goff, PQ, for serving as chair for this fun and important fundraiser. The Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Krista Williams, PQ, is working on several fundraisers for the remaining year. At the time of writing this article, we look forward to serving 169 guests at our Steak Night & Dessert Auction on August 26. Special kudos to Kara May and Andrea Peters, co-chairs, and Meredith Thompson for their hard work toward the success of this event. Wow, we have some creative and generous pastry chefs among us who donated to the dessert auction! What a sweet time!

A new fundraising event for Isis Temple will assisting the Hadi Shrine Circus Ticket Office with selling circus tickets. For many years we have volunteered in the office, but this has developed into a fundraising opportunity for us. The Nile ladies will work the office November 3–26 from the hours of 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Monday – Saturday, and
12:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday. On Monday – Saturday there will be two shifts per day, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM. I’m hoping I can count on many of you to
volunteer for a shift or two. Watch your email for additional information about signing up to work. Should you want to schedule your work assignment now, please contact me.

The Social Committee, chaired by Terri Cheesman, is organizing a bus trip to the Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville, IN, on Saturday, December 3, to see Irving Berlin’s White Christmas 2022. The New Image Travel bus will leave the Hadi Shrine parking lot at 2:00 PM CST and return at 11:30 PM CST. The cost is $50/member. Payment for your reserved ticket is required when placing your reservation. This is not a fundraiser but rather a time for fun and fellowship. For more information and to place your reservation, please contact me.

In closing, if your time permits, please attend Stated Session at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 6. During this time, let us honor our Past Queens and give recognition to our 50-year members. I will enjoy seeing you. As the lyrics say, we are standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us, we are stronger for their courage, wiser for their words, and grateful for their vision.

With Nile love and hugs,
Kathy Stewart, Queen

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

It is a great honor, privilege, and responsibility to serve as Queen of Isis Temple No. 41 for the ensuing year. I look forward to a Nile year of fun and fellowship. The Installation on March 20, 2022, was beautiful! Thank you to everyone who participated in the ceremony, and thank you to all who were present with your love and support. Thank you to our Past Supreme Queen, Past Queens, Fellow Officers, and Ladies of the Household for continuing to bring your unique and special gifts to our Temple. “Together we can do great things.” —Mother Teresa

My promise to you is to perform my duty the best I can. I will work collaboratively with you in harmony and trust. We will have fun and good fellowship. We are already busy planning fundraisers and socials. Watch your emails and future newsletters for details. We will work to increase our membership and fill the seats in the Temple each month for Stated Session. We will serve the Supreme Temple with our gifts and talents. We will live well, laugh often, and let love grow with friendship.

Everyone benefits from your sweet charity of generously giving of your resources, time, and talents. Through your hard work and dedication as a valued and respected member of our order, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of children receiving care at Shriners Children’s™. Our philanthropy is fortunate to havewomen like you working together to advance our sisterhood and transform the lives of children and their families. We are guided by our five virtues that express what we believe about who we are and reflect how we are called to serve.

When your time and abilities permit, I hope to see you at Stated Sessions and our events. Consider joining the Egyptian Band or Patrol. Attend a Princeton Nile Club meeting. These are ways to strengthen friendships and gain emotional connection from our relationships with one another. The flowers of friendship will bloom softly at our feet. In closing, “Let your love be generous. Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly wel-comed angels.” Hebrews 13:1-2

Dear Ladies of the Household,

Here it is, the end of my term as Queen of Isis Temple No. 41. When you are young, the years walk on by; when you get older, they seem to fly. Use your years wisely— you don’t get them back.

I extend my deepest appreciation to my officers, ceremonial assistants, committee members, and everyone who showed their support by volunteering for fundraisers and events. Thank you to the units and clubs for sharing your hospitality at your meetings.

My sincere sympathy to those who suffered the loss of a loved one. My God comfort you and know they are not gone forever for we will be together someday.

I wish Princess Kathy Stewart and her officers a happy and successful year.

Nile love,
Karla Goff, Queen

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. It was great to see so many of you at our May Stated Session. Nice to be able to be back together.

On May 15, Jean Rickard, PQ, Princess Chaplain Shannon Foster, and I visited some of our shut-ins. It was nice to see the ladies. On May 29, the Nile yard sale had a profit of $2000! Thank you so, so much for my helpers and donors.

On June 8, the Princeton Nile Club had their annual auction. The broke a record on their proceeds!

On June 22, nine of our members attended the first-ever virtual Supreme Session. It was amazing how well everything went.

Please check your schedules to see if you could donate some of your time to work the 4-H concession stand. We need day shift volunteers, mostly.

On August 15, we will have our Nile summer picnic, and the following weekend on August 22, Supreme Queen Donna Kramer will make her official visit to Isis Temple No. 41. The banquet will be held at Hadi Shrine at 2 p.m. with the ceremonial following at 4 p.m. We would love to see you in attendance. See the July newsletter for more details.

Nile love and stay safe,
Karla Goff, Queen

A Familiar Path

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

In 2008, I served as Queen for Isis Temple. I never thought 13 years ago that I would be
walking this path again.

It was my honor to be installed as 2021 Queen of Isis Temple No. 41, Daughters of
the Nile, on March 16 by Installing Queen Sue Layman, PSQ, in a virtual installation
ceremony via Zoom. Seventeen officers were present and were installed into their
respective positions. I am so thankful that these beautiful ladies have accepted their
positions for the ensuing year.

Pr. Royal Kathy Stewart coordinated a very entertaining and enlightening Betty Boop
addendum. Each officer, Ceremonial Assistants, and PSQ Sue held up a poster of
Betty Boop, reciting what Betty stands for, along with Lady of the Keys Terri Cheesman, doing a great rendition of Betty Boop. I look forward to this coming year and working with Ill. Sir John Nelson and the Hadi Shrine.

Congratulations to JPQ Casey Wonders for your year so well served.

Please, ladies, keep in mind we need new members! Seek and find, for if we don’t, the
Daughters of the Nile no longer won’t. It is sad to say that when I joined our temple,
we had around 1,000 members; we are now in the 400s. We have lost 600 members in
20 years. Think of who you can ask to be a member of this beautiful organization.

Nile love,
Karla Goff, Queen

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

My eventful year as Queen is ending, and I truly want to thank each and every one of you amazing ladies for all the love and support. This past year has not been anywhere close to normal, but we have all continued to be there and support one another as well as learning a few new technical tricks when it comes to Zoom. We have also been able to raise quite a bit of money for the Daughters of the Nile Foundation and our temple this year because of your wonderful donations!

Our January Stated Session and annual memorial service was held via Zoom. We honored 17 ladies we had lost in the course of 2020.

During our February Stated Session, we were able to perform an Obligation-only initiation for our new Princess Sydney Hoben. It was an honor to perform such a duty in front of our temple. During this year, we have brought in 7 new Princesses. Ladies, please continue to bring in those proposals for membership so we can continue to grow and raise monies.

I wish Princess Royal Karla Goff all the best with her coming year, and I know she will do an amazingly wonderful job for our temple. I hope to see you all in person very soon!

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

I hope all of you are doing well, staying healthy and safe, and most of all staying positive! This is one crazy year! Just remember, we are always here if you need anything at all!

We were finally ready meet in person in September, with a virtual option to allow members join us both ways. It was different but nice to see members who do not live close to the temple join us. We honored our Past Queens for all their support, love, advice, kindness, etc. The list could truly go on for pages of this newsletter! Thank you, Past Queens, for all you do for the members and our temple. We are truly blessed to have you!

We also celebrated our 50-year members! Jean Rickard, PQ, was at the meeting to accept her 50-year pin and Stepping Stones to Happiness. Our other 50-year members who were mailed their pins are Carol McCormick, PQ (who was present via Zoom), Beverly Besing, Joyce Schmitt, Doris Unsel, and Emma Lou Woods.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Nile 101 class on Sept. 23. Everyone learned something new! We were able to have the Isis Temple Family Picnic on Sept. 27, at Audubon Park. We had a nice turnout and some great food! Thank you to all who were able to come and join us.

Our October Stated Session was also an in-person meeting, the officers have done an amazing job with their ritualistic work and floor work this year. I could not be prouder of them! During the meeting, I was finally able (on behalf of Isis Temple) to present Jr. Past Queen Cheryl Stader with her beautiful Past Queen’s jewel. JPQ Cheryl was also able to sign the Bible. It was a special moment.

Our St. Louis Hospital Equipment fundraiser has reached over $3,700.00! Ladies, you absolutely rock! That is amazing! Just amazing!

The response to the Card Party by Mail is been terrific! The joker has finally been found…Carolyn Nolte will receive the cash prize of $50!!!!! Congratulations! Ladies, we have raised over $1,700 during this mail-in card party event!

Thank you all so much for all the support during my Queen year! I truly couldn’t do this without knowing all of you are supporting me and standing behind me!

Continue to stay healthy, safe, and positive!

Casey Wonders, Queen

Adapting to Circumstances

8/3/2020

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,

It has been quite an interesting spring and summer of 2020. I want to thank you for your continued support during this time. I would not make it through this year without all of you wonderful ladies!

The May Zoom meeting had a great turnout of around 50 members. Ladies, that is amazing! While I did miss seeing you all in person, it was nice sitting there in my PJs for our meeting. Our May fundraiser, the virtual bake sale, brought in $665.00! Thank you!!!

Supreme Queen Heather’s visit to Isis Temple No. 41 was a non-traditional visit, but she loved Evansville and all the history behind it. We did an obligation-only initiation via Zoom for our two new Princesses, Princess Shannon “Sheay” Russelburg and Princess Melissa Turpin. Welcome to our wonderful order, and I cannot wait to meet you both in person! The turnout for our Zoom meeting with SQ Heather was also wonderful! She enjoyed speaking with you all that evening.

I want to thank my officers. Ladies, during our one practice this year, you knocked it out of the park with your memory work! I’m so proud and honored to have you as my officers this year! To my ceremonial assistants, thank you for everything…and I mean everything!

I want to congratulate our Supreme Appointees for 2020. Past Supreme Queen Sue Layman, Chairman of the Supreme Temple Bylaws of the Subordinate Temples Committee and member of the Supreme Temple Finance Committee; Past Queen Penny McDonald, Supreme Action Team; Past Queen Linda Trible, Bylaws of Subordinate Temples Committee; Past Queen Krista Williams, Supreme Temple Website Committee; Past Queen Tiffany Ball, Supreme Goodwill Ambassador to the Central Area; and Past Queen Nancy Markham, Supreme Canadian Flag Escort. Congratulations on your appointments, ladies! We are so proud of you!

Just a note about future events. We will have a Nile picnic in 2020, but I have decided to move it to the end of September or beginning of October. I thought it would be nice to see each other since the Fall Festival has been canceled for the year and maybe the weather will be a little cooler. Also, I am working on scheduling a space for our dinner honoring our Supreme Appointees in August. I have it on the calendar for August 19; however, that is subject to change since school now starts on the same day. It might be changed to the week after the 26th if the restaurant banquet area is open.

Ladies, I will see you in September for our meeting at Hadi Temple. We did change it to Monday, September 14, at 7:00 p.m. We will take all precautions and continue to follow the CDC guidelines as well. I hope to see you all!

Nile Love,
Casey Wonders, Queen

What a Strange Time We're Living In

4/15/2020

Fellow Officers and Ladies of the Household,
It’s been an interesting start to my Queen year, that’s for sure. But according to my motto, you must “smile at the obstacle, for it is a bridge.” Ladies, I’ve been trying to smile my way through this quarantine and uncertain time.

My installation was held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at 3 p.m. Tina Dobbs, PQ, installed me as Queen, PQ Karla Goff as Princess Royal, and Princess Kathy Stewart as Princess Tirzah. Princess Judy Schultz was installed by me on Sunday, March 29, 2020, at 4 p.m. as Princess Badoura.

Since the installation, I’ve still been working and staying at home and spending time with my 4-year-old son, Cooper; my husband, Cole Wonders; my 2 dogs (Finn and Shadow); and my cat, Jack. I have been working on cleaning out our house and organizing it (then not being able to find anything after I organize!). Of course, I’m practicing my part and working on my Stated Session agenda for when we meet again. Hopefully, we can meet again in May when Hadi re-opens, as this is current plan of action. As always, things are subject to change, and I will get that information out as soon as I know anything.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Supreme Queen Dale Obernolte’s family and Sharon Temple No. 92 on the passing of Supreme Queen Dale. She will be greatly missed. May she sparkle on forever in our memories.

Congratulations to Heather Krastins-Lambert on becoming our new Supreme Queen. Heather was virtually installed on April 7, 2020.

A few upcoming dates for your calendars: our May Stated Session will be held on May 4. Hopefully, we’ll be able to squeeze in a Nile 101 for new members going to Supreme Session this year in St. Paul, MN. Our Supreme Queen Official Visit will be held at the Masonic Temple on July 14, 2020, at 7 p.m. The banquet will be beforehand at 5:30 p.m. Our practice will be held Sunday, July 12, 2020, in the afternoon for all units and officers. The time hasn’t been fully set at this time.

Keeping smiling!
